Ancient Landscapes of Wessex
No journey to England would be complete without experiencing the powerful sense of mystery exuded by Stonehenge and Avebury, two of the greatest prehistoric sites in the world.
Stonehenge
For five millennia the megalithic standing stones have remained a mystery, standing sentinel over Salisbury Plain.
The mystery of why Stonehenge was built is still argued over. What inspired its builders to create this testament to incredible human endeavour? How did they transport the "bluestones", weighing up to four tons, 240 miles over sea, land and river? Why was this area so important that it is the epicentre of 450 prehistoric monuments?
To really stimulate your imagination, arrange your visit to coincide with a midwinter sunset or a magical midsummer sunrise and get a unique experience of 5,000 years of history.
On a limited number of dates we can arrange a unique guided tour taking you right into the heart of the inner circle where you can walk amongst the stones and experience a once in a lifetime event away from the crowds. Please book early as numbers are restricted.
Avebury
Incredible Avebury! One of the most important megalithic monuments in Europe, a magical, spiritual place that defies the imagination; it is gargantuan, and rightly deserves the accolade given by the archaeologist William Stukeley in 1743 as "very probably the most magnificent temple in the world".
This world famous monument lies at the heart of a stunning prehistoric landscape that includes the UK's largest long barrow at nearby West Kennet and Silbury Hill, Europe's tallest man-made mound.
