Pulpits, Pubs & People
Throughout Wessex, beautiful villages and market towns abound, rich with medieval churches and country inns, steeped in history and legends. Our Pubs, Pulpits and People tours are the perfect antidote to the stresses and strains of modern life.
Sit back and relax and we'll travel gently from village to village, stopping perhaps to lunch at a 13th-century inn meeting local people, hear stories spanning thousands of years, from King Alfred burning his cakes, to the village of Tyneham and it's villagers who left never to return.
Hear how pilgrims travelled from Wessex to form New Dorchester, Massachusetts on board the "Mary & John", and how at nearby Tolpuddle, six farm labourers were transported to Australia for the crime of forming a union.
Wander the delightful little town of Sherborne with its two castles and an abbey. Nearby, Sir Walter Raleigh built his Tudor castle in 1594 and is rumoured to have enjoyed his "Virginian Weed" amongst the beautiful gardens that surround it.
Many of our visitors explore this area exploring their genealogical history. We'll be pleased to help you explore your roots, and can arrange trips to libraries, museums and churches which could give you new insights. We can also provide personal help from local historians and genealogical experts.
