Follow in the footsteps of travellers and pilgrims, who, for centuries have journeyed to Glastonbury, Somerset the seat of Christianity in England, steeped in legend and mystery.
Marvel at its romantic ruins, the Holy Thorn tree, claimed to have originated from Joseph of Arimathea's staff, and the supposed final resting place of King Arthur and Queen Guinevere.
Enjoy the peace and tranquillity before visiting the Blood Spring, or, Chalice Well at the foot of Glastonbury Tor. The Tor is marked by a series of pathways and terraces that some say form a labyrinthine maze, leading to the Underworld and home of Gwyn ap Nuud, King of the fairy folk!
Taking a short journey across the Somerset Levels we'll arrive at the smallest city in England, Wells, and one of the most magnificent cathedrals in Europe, world famous as a treasure house of medieval sculpture.
The nearby Vicar's Close is the oldest continuously inhabited street in Europe and within a short stroll lies the Bishop's Palace medieval Palace, home of the Bishops of Bath and Wells for 800 years. We'll walk amongst 14 acres of garden; visit the Bishop's private Chapel, the ruined Great Hall and the Gatehouse where the famous mute swans ring a bell for food.
At nearby Muchelney, the atmospheric and once-remote 'great island' amid the orchards of the Somerset Levels, stands a complete early Tudor house in miniature. Originally the abbot's lodgings, this building includes a magnificent great chamber with ornate fireplace, carved settle and stained glass.
Nearby, John Leach, eldest grandson of renowned potter Bernard Leach and son of David Leach, continues the family tradition at Muchelney Pottery while at Burrow Hill, Kingsbury Episcopi, the Somerset tradition of cider making is truly alive and well.
